Fun ways to practice Spanish in Barcelona

In need of some tips how to improve your language skills? Sometimes learning a new language can be frustrating and you might feel like you are stuck. I have the feeling sometimes when learning castellano. It is good to find different, fun ways to practice the language to keep your motivation high and improve different areas. Below I have put together some tips that have helped me in my language learning journey.

Go to language exchanges

There are maaaany language exchange meet ups in Barcelona waiting for you! It is a super fun way to spend your evening, meeting new people while having a glass of wine and practicing languages. For example Mundo Lindo, is a language exchange event that is held weekly in the heart of Barcelona. Find more information here http://mundolingo.org/barcelona.

Find a tandem partner

Meeting up with a nice person who you can help in their language skills and vice versa, and in the best case make a good new friend, is a perfect option to practice your conversational language skills. It is easy to find a tandem partner for example from related Facebook groups and language exchange meet ups. You both have the same goal – to learn a new language and that is why it’s easy to understand one another. It is wonderful to realize that your confidence in speaking another language grows when you are meeting up regularly while having fun. Check out the Facebook group Language exchange in Barcelona – tandem – that is where I found my own tandem partner!

Practice your Spanish with Marga

Someone recommended Marga, a lovely Spanish teacher, for me and when I was struggling with my Spanish, and I decided to contact her. That was a really good decision! I learned much more in a short time that I ever learned in a language school. First you will get a free trial where you go through together the things you need practice with, and evaluate your level. Marga will tailor the language teaching package according to your needs and offers online support whenever you need it. I highly recommend!

Download the Duolingo-app

Duolingo is a mobile application that allows you to practice languages for free. It is good especially for improving your vocabulary. It is perfect way to consume time while you are for example waiting for a bus or before going to sleep. Find more information here https://www.duolingo.com/.

Find a hobby in Spanish – or volunteer

Turn your life in Spanish and get a new hobby! There are many possibilities for example in centres civics in different neighbourhoods in Barcelona where you can take courses in arts, cooking, sports and much more - in Spanish and Catalan. Check out http://ajuntament.barcelona.cat/centrescivics/ca and sign up for your new hobby! You can also give up your time to others and look for the volunteering opportunities in Barcelona – walking abandoned dogs, taking care of the elderly or helping the homeless people. This way you give your support for the local community, do something meaningful and at the same time learn things about yourself and practice your language skills.

Good luck!

Love,
Kristiina in Barcelona
